I’m all about goals this summer. I’ve already make strawberry ice cream, fixed my bike, and booked a camping vacation. Clearly, world domination is within my grasp. Here are my five adoption-related goals for the next two months.
1) Secure a copy of Adoption Nation, and review it for Focus on Adoption magazine.
2) Hang out with these amazing kids who all joined their families through adoption.
3) Talk with Theo’s birthparents about ways to nuture our relationship while they’re away at university.
4) Make a concerted effort to read Theo books with adoption themes such as The Family Book by Todd Parr and The Red Thread.
5) Begin creating an adoption book for Theo, one that tells the story of his beginnings through photos and drawings.
Is adoption on your mind this summer? If not, do you have any summer parenting goals?

That is great H! I love the idea of creating an adoption book for Theo. Wow!
Great ideas, I love that you’re focused on ensuring that he is surrounded by a great network of friends with the same background, and keeping his birthparents in the picture, and an adoption book is a fabulous idea! I’ve always wanted to write a children’s book about adoption (from the perspective of an adoptee). Bucket list!
Hi Harriet – I always love reading your posts. You have always had such a way with words…..I thought you might be interested in Gordon Neufeld’s material on adoption (have you heard of him? He is a developmental psychologist in Vancouver retired from private practice who has some amazing material for anyone involved with kids….his book was co-authored by Gabor Mate and is called Hold onto your kids). I am currently doing my advanced studies training with his institute to become a parent consultant. He has a DVD called the Art and Science of Transplanting Children. It focuses on how to work with attachment in adoption, step parenting, fostering etc…..how to bridge the separations that are inevitable here…Thought it might be of interest to you. Any of his work is really amazing….it has completely changed my parenting!!! (for the better). Not in the “what to do when my child….” kind of way but rather “what do I see happening in my child????” Completely insight based approach rather than a prescriptive approach….helps parents find that place in themselves where they become their child’s best answer…..really cool stuff!!!! and it’s growing me up too, which is always a good thing!!!!

If you haven’t read it yet, my daughter and I love The Odd Egg by Emily Gravett. It’s super.
My adoption goal…save for a trip to visit the place where my daughter is from next summer.
Camping with a baby or toddler seems intimidating. But while it requires a bit more work and preparation, the rewards are also great. Camping is learning experience for both baby and parents! Knowing how to keep your baby or toddler comfortable throughout the trip will make the experience a good one for the entire family.`
